Trailhead coordinates: 33.182132, -116.214176 Simply named THE SLOT, this narrow silt stone canyon provides one of the most exciting hikes in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. 1.2-mike trek is capped off with a passage beneath a gravity-defying rock … Jun 13, 2018 Or follow the truck trail until you get to the Calcite “mine”, but in my opinion this hike is not worth it just for that. Conclusion: I utterly loved this area and found its diverse network of slot canyons to be far more engaging than the narrow slot canyons I have previously explored in other areas of Anza Borrego. The Calicite Mine Slot Canyon is a great way to spend 1-2 hours in the Calcite Mine / Truckhaven Rocks area. Hiking into the wash that the slot canyon is in offers classic desert landscape that is unique to this area. The views from the mine area were supposed to be superb and this hike didn't disappoint. The State Park brochure said that the trailhead could be found at the 78 mile marker on S22 highway. The direction was to pull off the highway into a small parking area and head due north up the old 4 wheel drive road. Mar 31, 2011 · Calcite Mine is 1.9 miles from Route S22 over the mine road, and a little farther through the narrows. Plan to hike at least a quarter mile around the mine site on this varied 4.25-mile trek with 600 feet of elevation between the low and high points.

A most scenic hike with a lot of slot like canyons. Hike down the road signed Palm Wash. Turn left into the Palm Wash canyon. Take the next fork to the right and follow it to the the end. The end is a boulder blocking the wash. Hike back and take the first canyon on the right and keep right in the canyon.

Slot Canyon The Calcite Mine, which dates to World War II days, is situated on the northeast slope of the Santa Rosa Mountains below Travelers Peak. It is a collection of crazily shaped sandstone configurations located a little over a mile and a half from County Road S-22 over a jeep trail that is easy to walk but difficult to drive. Calcite Mine is 1.8 miles from S22 and 540 feet above, high enough to have good views over the weathered, undulating surroundings. Some of the rocky outcrops are nicely eroded, displaying tafoni-like textures, but the mine itself is not so interesting, as the only relics are some shallow trenches, partially filled in. Walk uphill to the abandoned Calcite Mine. As we cross the Palm Wash we explore the upper slot canyon (less accessible). Next we go further uphill to the actual mining site. There is some exploring to do and an overlook. On our way back we take a left turn into the Palm Wash. Dec 11, 2019

Check out this hike: Jun 13, 2018 · To get to Calcite Mine we continued on the S-22 toward mile marker 38. This particular canyon is called Palm Slot and is located in the Northeast region of the park. You can park on the shoulder of S-22 and hike in toward the canyon or if you have a 4×4 high clearance vehicle you can drive closer to the slot entrance. Jun 30, 2020 · I haven’t hiked all that many slot canyons since, but Little Wildhorse Canyon is the gold standard and basically I’ll hike anything labeled as a slot canyon, no matter how short. We had a map with a nameless slot canyon on the way to an old calcite mine.
